Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Always use caution with anything that young children might put in their mouths.

Materials:
  • Tray
  • Lentils, beans, beads
  • Small pitcher
  • Small bowl
Procedure:
  1. Fill one small pitcher with lentils, beans or beads.
  2. Place pitcher and a small bowl inside of a shallow tray.
  3. Give children a brief demonstration and explanation of how to pour the contents into the bowl slowly without spilling. Be sure to explain the purpose of this activity, which is to strengthen their fine-motor skills and to practice real-life skills.
  4. Place the tray with contents on an appropriate shelf in your classroom for students to use independently.
Assessment:
  • Observe and record any improvement in the child’s fine-motor skills with the pouring and handling of the contents on the tray.
* When students are able to pour the contents successfully, use a larger pitcher instead and continue to observe and record their progress.
Extension:
When students are able to recognize and create the shapes correctly, you may introduce more complicated shapes, or alter the Popsicle sticks so that they are not color coded, or numbered for the sides. Adapt this lesson to what suits your students best.

    A possible answer is:

Here is an example of a possible answer for the question on the previous page.

Pouring lentils back and forth helps children exercise small muscles while they complete a task that is done every day. The task of pouring any number of things into another container is a life skill that preschool children can practice and strengthen over time as their muscles grow.
