(Unit 5) Topic 6: Organizing Learning Centers

1 Clock Hour of Early Childhood Education

Arranging the Classroom

Topic 6 Page 8

As you begin thinking about the learning centers you are going to include in your classroom, you will want to consider the placement of them.  The arrangement of centers will be dependent upon the overall size of the room and the number of children in your care. Generally, you will want each learning center to be able to accommodate 4-5 children. Teachers will need to consider what centers are near others as well. Often, more noisy centers like the block and art center are placed near each other to prevent distraction from quiet centers, such as the reading center.
Know that the arrangement of centers will also need to be adjusted based on the children in your specific classroom. All classrooms have a different atmosphere, and every child in it comes from a different background. Think of each classroom as its own ecosystem so to speak. There are many different variables that go into how your room functions. What works one year may not be suitable the next. If you find that the way your centers are organized isn’t going so well, don’t be afraid to change them and see if a different arrangement works better for your students.
