Garden Sensory Bin

Age Group: ​
  • Preschool
Objectives:
  • Student will develop sensory motor skill
  • Student will engage in cooperative play with other students
CDA Competency Standard:  
II.4.3a
  • Activities and materials encourage children to develop their senses
    • a) Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch experiences are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities

Materials:  
  • soil
  • rocks
  • insect figurines
  • fabric flowers and leaves
  • terra cotta pots and/or mason jars
  • scoops and rakes
  • marbles (if desired)
  • large plastic bin
Procedure: 
  1. Prepare for the activity by adding all of the materials to the sensory bin.
  2. Place the sensory bin in an appropriate area.
  3. Invite students to play 
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the student’s fine motor skills. Did they scoop and pour the dirt successfully? How did they interact with other students? Record any dialog that occurred.
