(Unit 5) Topic 7: The Dramatic Play Learning Center

2 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Organizing the Dramatic Play Center

Topic 7 Page 5

Picture
Dramatic play can take place anywhere! Props can be set up throughout the center, indoors and out.
Choosing a Location
Ideally, the dramatic play area should be set up near other noisy areas, such as the block or art area. The center should not be located near quiet areas like the library area as this might disturb other students that are attempting to read.
The size of the dramatic play area will be dependent on the size of the overall classroom. Generally, the center will want to accommodate at least 3-4 children at a time. The space for dramatic play should be clearly defined to avoid dramatic play items from traveling to other centers. These expectations should be explained to children when the dramatic play center is introduced.
Selecting Furniture
Child-sized furniture should be included in the dramatic play area to make learning comfortable. Teachers can include an appropriate sized table, chairs, shelves, couch, armoire, bookshelf and kitchen set.

Deciding on Props
There are many materials that are traditionally included in the dramatic play area to enhance the learning experience. Here are just a few suggestions:
  • Pretend food
  • Empty food boxes such as cereal or crackers
  • A variety of dress-up clothes
  • Dolls and accessories
  • Magazines, newspapers, menus and books
  • Play phone
  • Pretend money
  • Kitchen utensils
  • Pots and pans
  • Stuffed animals
All of the props should have a designated spot in the center, so when children are cleaning up the area, it is clear where everything goes. Be sure to label any bins and shelves with pictures and print, so there is no guessing for students. Don’t be afraid to get creative with the props you choose for dramatic play. You can even get your students involved by asking them to help you create props that relate to the current theme. You’ll be surprised what imaginative ideas they come up with!
