Social and Emotional Development
When children engage in dramatic play with others, they are learning an abundance of social skills such as taking turns, cooperation, negotiation, and impulse control. As adults, we often forget that children need time and opportunities to develop these skills.
The dramatic play area gives children a chance to practice and experiment with social norms. They learn that certain actions will result in positive reactions from their peers, and others will elicit a negative reaction.  Children can work out scary, troubling, or otherwise confusing situations in a safe and non-threatening environment through dramatic play. When role paying, children can become more comfortable with these experiences, such as going to the doctor, by acting out getting a ‘shot’. This is a child’s way of feeling more comfortable and secure with the world around them.
Language
As children interact with their peers, they are practicing and developing their language.  They must use their language skills to work together and explain what they are doing during play. They learn to ask and answer questions and express themselves. When they converse with other children, they are introduced to new vocabulary in a natural and meaningful way.
