Materials:
  • water table
  • water
  • colander
  • foam sheets
  • blue food coloring
Procedure:
  1. Prepare for the activity by creating the sensory bin. Add water to the water table along with a few drops of blue food coloring to change the water color. Cut out several rain drops from the foam sheets and place them in the bin as well.
  2. Place the bin in an appropriate area and introduce the child to it
  3. As the child is playing, introduce new vocabulary words to them that relate to the activity

**Always monitor young children around water.
Note:  Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children.  Infants require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow infants to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard.
Assessment:
  • Observe and record the child’s communication skills. Did they attempt to say any of the new vocabulary words back to you? How did they react to the water sounds? Take pictures of the activity and place them in the child’s portfolio along with your notes.
