Children should arrive in the same place and the same manner each day. For example, the child should come into the classroom, their things should be put away and they should join their peers in the same type of activity each day.
Many programs begin the day with free play where children can interact with their peers, explore the classroom and settle into their surroundings. After a block of free play time it is usually time for breakfast with ample time being provided for a healthy meal that meets licensing guidelines. After breakfast it will be clean up time and time for the next few blocks of activities. These might include circle time or music with older children, or diapering and reading time for infants.

A daily schedule is essential to the basic structure of each day. Consistency enables children to feel secure, giving them the confidence and freedom to explore the environment. Although consistency is important, it is also necessary to remain flexible. Extra time may be needed if children are particularly interested in an activity or topic of discussion.
