Afternoon Routine

​After lunch or mealtime comes the afternoon’s activities. These usually include outdoor play or recess, structured activities, unstructured activities and departure. Depending upon the age group that you work with and the length of your program you will have more or less activities during the afternoon hours. Some programs will focus on child-directed learning in the afternoon hours where children have tools and materials that can be manipulated to support a new concept or scaffold prior knowledge. Other programs will have teacher-led learning in the afternoon which will provide traditional learning opportunities.
​Infant, toddler and preschool classrooms may divide the afternoon hours into specified blocks of time where a nap or rest period occurs. After the rest period children will participate in structured activities where they will explore certain materials to develop skills that partner with their developmental level. Preschool age children who are in child care for an entire day will require a nap or rest period as per licensing requirements.
