Creating a Classroom Community

​Not only is it important for you and your students to connect to one another, it is important for the entire classroom to connect. 

A sense of community will promote safety, belonging, and will ultimately help your classroom function more effectively as a whole. ​

Here are just a few ways to help create a strong classroom community: ​

Assign Jobs 
For Preschool, Kindergarten, and School-Age students, give each student a job around the classroom. Post the jobs on a chart and rotate them weekly or bi-weekly. Assigning jobs gives children ownership in their classroom. It promotes the idea that we all need to work together in order for our classroom to function. 

Create a “Classroom Constitution” 
Go over rules and procedures with students. Ask them what rules they think should be in place and why. This working together to create a list of rules lets students know that their opinions and ideas are valued and respected. Once the list is complete, have each student sign it. This ensures accountability for understanding. 

Talk about Bullying 
From the get-go students should know that bullying will not be tolerated in the classroom. There are many anti-bullying activities that can be done as a class. Explore what ones can be applied to your specific classroom and age-group. Talk with students about what bullying means and the impact our words have on others.
