​Managing the classroom can be a struggle for new and veteran teachers alike, and it is something that all teachers should continually be fine-tuning. After all, every group of students that you work with will be different. 
What works one year may not work the next. It’s always a good idea to re-evaluate classroom management strategies on a consistent basis including at the beginning of the year.   ​
​Reasons for Off-Track Behavior

The first step in classroom management is to get to the root of the problem by identifying why the child is behaving that way. ​Here are a few of the most common reasons for off-track behavior for children of all ages: ​

Medical Issues 
There may be a legitimate medical reason why the child is behaving a certain way. Parents may or may not be upfront about a child’s diagnoses. Be aware that it is never your job to diagnose a child with any medical condition. Any concerns you may have need to be shared with a director and then brought up to parents in a sensitive manner. 

Trouble at Home 
Children come into our care with all sorts of traumas. If you do happen to know about a child’s background, make sure that you keep the situation confidential. This child may require more patience (and a few more hugs) from you. 

They are Hungry or Tired
If the child only slept 5 hours last night, of course they are going to have behavior issues. This is where communication with parents comes into play. If you know their home schedule is off-track, you will be better prepared for any off-track behavior that day.

​They are Frustrated
More than likely if the child is lashing out, it is because they are frustrated and do not know how to express it in an appropriate way. It is our job as educators to show them positive ways to communicate how they are feeling. 
​Knowing this information will make it a little bit easier to understand why a child is behaving a certain way. They are trying to tell you how they feel and what they need. ​
