A top priority for teachers during the first few weeks should be getting to know students. It is critical that you develop a meaningful relationship with every child in your care, no matter their age. Even infants and toddlers have preferences and personality traits that educators will begin to understand after a while. This creates a trusting relationship with a caring adult that makes very young children feel comfortable and secure.
As you get to know their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, you will be better able to help them emotionally and as a result, academically. ​

​As your relationships with the children grows stronger over the coming weeks, you will begin to see how it affects their behavior. Many behavior issues stem from not connecting with the child. On the flip side, positive relationships between students and teachers can make a world of difference. ​
